Z-Editor Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 12 July 2026

Z-Editor ("the app", "we", "us") is a free, open-source document editor that runs entirely in your web browser. This policy explains what information the app handles and how. By using Z-Editor you agree to this policy.

1. Who we are and how the app works

Z-Editor is a client-side single-page application hosted on GitHub Pages. There is no Z-Editor account and no Z-Editor server or database. Your documents are processed locally in your browser and are stored only where you choose to keep them — on your own device or in your own Google Drive. We never receive, transmit, or store the contents of your documents on our own infrastructure.

2. Information we handle

a) Usage analytics (Google Analytics 4). If enabled, the app uses Google Analytics to collect anonymous, aggregated usage data — such as page views, feature interactions, approximate geographic region, browser type, device type, and screen size. This helps us understand how the app is used and where to improve it. It is not used to identify you personally. See Google's Privacy Policy and how Google Analytics safeguards data.

b) Google Drive (optional). If you choose to open or save documents with Google Drive, the app requests the drive.file permission. This is a per-file scope: the app can only access the specific files that you open or create with Z-Editor through the Google file picker. It cannot see or access any other files in your Drive. The OAuth access token is held only in your browser's memory for the current session and is not stored on any server. Document content exchanged with Google Drive goes directly between your browser and Google's APIs — it never passes through our servers.

Google API Services User Data Policy — Limited Use. Z-Editor's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We only use Google Drive data to provide the app's open/save features at your direction; we do not transfer or sell it, do not use it for advertising, and do not allow humans to read it except as required for security, to comply with the law, or with your explicit consent.

3. Local storage and cookies

The app may use your browser's local storage to remember settings and, where applicable, Google Analytics may set cookies for measurement. No sensitive personal data is stored this way. You can clear this at any time through your browser settings.

4. Data sharing and selling

We do not sell your data and we do not share it with third parties beyond the service providers named here (Google, for Analytics and Drive; GitHub, for hosting). Each processes data under its own privacy policy.

5. Data retention

Because we operate no server, we retain no personal data. Documents remain in your device or Google Drive under your control. Analytics data is retained by Google according to the property's configured retention period.

6. Children

Z-Editor is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

7. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes are posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
